Visit Lumo Energy

As a major sponsor of The Reds and Queensland Rugby, we are heavily involved in Queensland Rugby. You will see our Lumo Energy Shine Points at the community rugby games throughout Queensland and working with local clubs. We want to ensure that there is a strong future in rugby and that the sport is kept alive for generations to come. We’ve seen some great talent on the field and it got us thinking, what tips would The Reds players have for these up and comers?

Check out our interviews with James Horwill, Digby Ioane and other Reds players to find out what it takes to play top level rugby. This is for all the kids, and adults, who one day dream about playing rugby professionally.

Don’t forget about our exclusive Queensland offer, switch your electricity to Lumo Energy and get 10% off your electricity rates and also receive a cash contribution to a local rugby club of your choice.

Knowing which of your appliances consumes the most energy can make a change in the way you use appliances around your home. It can also be a major factor in the buying process when you need to purchase new items.  When your energy  invoice arrives, it tells you how much you have to pay and how much energy you have used, but do you really know what you’re being charged for? You may think that a TV consumes less energy than a kettle, or a coffee machine uses less energy than a clothes washer, but in fact it’s the opposite. Being aware of how much energy you use is a great way to lower your energy cost as well as your environmental impact.

A good way to calculate your energy consumption is by knowing how many watts each appliance is consuming. It is then possible to measure approximately how much each appliance costs by calculating the hours used against your energy rates. There are many online applications to help you easily measure your energy consumption. Here is a user-friendly Interactive Energy Board made by General Electric that measures the use of each home appliance by watts, kilowatts hour, $US dollars cost ) and gallons of gas (1 gallon = 3.8 litres). It also has information to help you understand the terms used in your electricity bill.

Electricity is a rare thing in more countries than we think and new sustainable energy sources and generators are being designed to help people in third world countries access electricity. Take this as an example, a soccer ball that generates energy through use. sOccket is a fun and portable power source invented by four engineering students from Harvard University. This innovative soccer ball produces energy when you play with it, the more it gets kicked, the more energy it generates!

In most African countries, more than 75% of the population don’t have access to electricity. This soccer ball has been distributed in third world countries to help them be provided with an extra source of power. Soccer is the most played sport in the world and this little ball not only serves as entertainment, but also as a valuable energy source. Once you’ve finished playing with the ball, you can then use it to power LED lights or to charge batteries.  To generate about 3 hours of LED Light, only 15 minutes of play is required. The New South Wales government sold a large portion of NSW electricity assets for $5.3 billion. It has been announced today that Origin Energy will buy the retail assests of Integral Energy and Country Energy in an agreement worth $3.25 billion. TRU Energy has also confirmed that it will purchase Energy Australia’s retail business for over $2 billion.

Origin is also entering into GenTrader agreements with Eraring Energy and Country Energy even though Eraring Energy directors have walked out in protest over the sale price. This deal will mean Origin Energy will become Australia’s largest energy retailer, with over 4.6 million clients. Continue reading “NSW Government Sells Electricity Assets” »

Great Green Innovations

To all those Aussies out there who love the planet, but are not inclined to tree hugging, or public protesting, how about you save the planet in an uber-cool (and fun!) way? We have found some interesting new gadgets designed to be eco-friendly; helping you, and our planet shine. Check out the gadgets below and visit our website for some great energy saving tips.

Energy Producing Dance Floor

OK, so this first one may involve a little bit of travelling and is not technically a gadget, but we think it deserves a mention. Bar Surya in London has to be one of the first eco nightclubs. Powered by wind turbines and solar panels, with recycled furniture used inside (bathtubs as sofas and rolled magazines as table legs), the bar creates a unique atmosphere for its clubbers. The best part of it all – the DANCE FLOOR! Made from crystals with springs and power generators underneath, the dance floor produces a small electrical current when the springs are squeezed. The current is then fed into nearby batteries used to power parts of the club.
