We have all seen the advertisements and articles for renewable energy in Australia ensuring a cleaner country for the future and sustainability of our energy resources. It seems that the majority of energy retailers are pushing renewable energy and sustainability but is it really what Australians want?

According to the Australian Government Department of Resources Energy and Tourism renewable energy is not a key driver for consumers. Renewable energy only accounts for 2% of Australia’s energy supply and it is only forecasted to reach 8% of Australia’s total energy consumption by the year 2029 far from the current goal of renewable energy making up 20% of Australia’s consumption by 2020. Coal and oil will continue to be the primary resource due to its affordability.

So why are the forecasts so far off the goal, it is not due the lack of awareness, Origin Energy is currently running its Sustainability Drive campaign promoting sustainable energy and to help build ‘green’ neighbourhoods. Also other major retailers including Tru Energy, Red Energy, AGL are all pushing GreenPower accredited energy plans.

Electricity is a rare thing in more countries than we think and new sustainable energy sources and generators are being designed to help people in third world countries access electricity. Take this as an example, a soccer ball that generates energy through use. sOccket is a fun and portable power source invented by four engineering students from Harvard University. This innovative soccer ball produces energy when you play with it, the more it gets kicked, the more energy it generates!

In most African countries, more than 75% of the population don’t have access to electricity. This soccer ball has been distributed in third world countries to help them be provided with an extra source of power. Soccer is the most played sport in the world and this little ball not only serves as entertainment, but also as a valuable energy source. Once you’ve finished playing with the ball, you can then use it to power LED lights or to charge batteries.  To generate about 3 hours of LED Light, only 15 minutes of play is required. The New South Wales government sold a large portion of NSW electricity assets for $5.3 billion. It has been announced today that Origin Energy will buy the retail assests of Integral Energy and Country Energy in an agreement worth $3.25 billion. TRU Energy has also confirmed that it will purchase Energy Australia’s retail business for over $2 billion.

Origin is also entering into GenTrader agreements with Eraring Energy and Country Energy even though Eraring Energy directors have walked out in protest over the sale price. This deal will mean Origin Energy will become Australia’s largest energy retailer, with over 4.6 million clients. Continue reading “NSW Government Sells Electricity Assets” »

Along with deregulation of the energy markets, comes choice, plenty of choice, Victoria in particular is one of the most competitive energy markets in the world with consumers have a plethora of energy retailers to choose from.

So how do you choose the right retailer? Both Today Tonight and A Current Affair have recently run stories aiming to help consumers make the all important decision as to who their energy provider would be.

Both shows enlisted the help of Canstar Blue – who regularly surveys consumers to rate customer satisfaction for particular industries. The recent survey on electricity providers in Victoria covered the following categories: Price, Service, Billing and Overall Satisfaction.

Media Release

Wednesday 8 September 2010

30 children in the remote Mt Liebig Indigenous community (NT) eagerly await the delivery of their new BMX bikes on Saturday 18 September, donated by the Bikes for Bush Foundation.

In an exciting weekend for one of Australia’s remotest Indigenous communities, the children of Mt Liebig will receive 30 brand new BMX bikes on Saturday 18 September, courtesy of the Bikes for Bush Foundation. Bikes for Bush is the joint initiative of Pegasus Racing and Art Equity and supported by Foundation sponsor Lumo Energy.

“A seamless partnership of sport and art has brought together the old and young of the Mt Liebig community,” says Ralph Hobbs, Art Director of Art Equity. “A healthy lifestyle for young Indigenous people and a reconnection with their traditional stories from the older generation are the immediate benefits of the first recipients of the Bikes for Bush donation.”

Mt Liebig is a small township 325 kms west of Alice Springs in the heart of the region where the famous Desert art movement began. The Bikes for Bush Foundation has worked in association with the community art centre, Watiyawanu Artists of Amunturrngu, the school and Aged Care to facilitate this first installment of 30 bikes to children of the community. Part of the provision of bikes includes their management and maintenance, which is a community project to keep the new bikes in good working order for years to come. Lumo Energy, Living Links, City of Kinston Planting Day

Media Release

Thursday 9 September 2010
On Sunday 5 September more than 50 local residents attended the Lumo Energy Community Planting Day – planting 2,000 trees to help restore and revegetate a section of the lower Mordialloc Creek.

Local residents donned gloves and gardening tools, preparing and planting indigenous species along Mordialloc Creek before enjoying a barbecue lunch.

The enthusiastic local residents were joined by local City of Kingston council member Trevor Shewan, who said he enjoyed getting his hands dirty planting out the seedlings with local community volunteers.

“It was a great day with heaps of food on hand to curb our hunger, and beautiful sunshine following all the rain we had on Friday and Saturday night. A special thank you to Lumo Energy for partnering with the City of Kingston to support this Living Links project,” Trevor commented.

Lumo Energy is the most recent partner of environmental program Living Links – donating a stunning $30,000 investment to the group. This investment was matched by the City of Kingston, with the $60,000 investment being used to provide a great boost to the long term program to rehabilitate the creek environment opposite George Woods Reserve in Mordialloc.
