Lumo Energy MobileLumo Energy has launched its mobile site, perfect for those on the move and those who can’t put their smart-phone down.

These days it seems that smart-phones have become the norm, you can’t walk down the street without seeing someone glued to their fancy little smart-phone surfing the web, using social applications or playing Angry Birds and it is not just the young generation Y’ers, everyone is guilty of it.

According to Neilson, a whole heap of Aussies are using smart-phones, 43% of the population to be exact.  This means the internet is at their fingertips wherever they go (or wherever they have coverage). Lumo Energy receives over 2,000 visits from people on mobile devices each month. Continue reading “Lumo Energy Goes Mobile” »

We have all seen the advertisements and articles for renewable energy in Australia ensuring a cleaner country for the future and sustainability of our energy resources. It seems that the majority of energy retailers are pushing renewable energy and sustainability but is it really what Australians want?

According to the Australian Government Department of Resources Energy and Tourism renewable energy is not a key driver for consumers. Renewable energy only accounts for 2% of Australia’s energy supply and it is only forecasted to reach 8% of Australia’s total energy consumption by the year 2029 far from the current goal of renewable energy making up 20% of Australia’s consumption by 2020. Coal and oil will continue to be the primary resource due to its affordability.

So why are the forecasts so far off the goal, it is not due the lack of awareness, Origin Energy is currently running its Sustainability Drive campaign promoting sustainable energy and to help build ‘green’ neighbourhoods. Also other major retailers including Tru Energy, Red Energy, AGL are all pushing GreenPower accredited energy plans.

Knowing which of your appliances consumes the most energy can make a change in the way you use appliances around your home. It can also be a major factor in the buying process when you need to purchase new items.  When your energy  invoice arrives, it tells you how much you have to pay and how much energy you have used, but do you really know what you’re being charged for? You may think that a TV consumes less energy than a kettle, or a coffee machine uses less energy than a clothes washer, but in fact it’s the opposite. Being aware of how much energy you use is a great way to lower your energy cost as well as your environmental impact.

A good way to calculate your energy consumption is by knowing how many watts each appliance is consuming. It is then possible to measure approximately how much each appliance costs by calculating the hours used against your energy rates. There are many online applications to help you easily measure your energy consumption. Here is a user-friendly Interactive Energy Board made by General Electric that measures the use of each home appliance by watts, kilowatts hour, $US dollars cost ) and gallons of gas (1 gallon = 3.8 litres). It also has information to help you understand the terms used in your electricity bill.
