What is Natural Gas

Natural gas is a naturally occurring gas widely used for cooking and heating in the home. Recognised as the cleanest fossil fuel, natural gas is a reliable, efficient and cost effective alternative to electricity. There are a number of natural gas companies operating around Australia that can connect your home with natural gas. It is important to take the time to compare the rates and plans to find a complete package offering the most advantages for you and your family.

What is natural gas made of?

Natural gas forms over millions of years as plants and animals decay and compress deep beneath the Earth's surface. It is extracted by deep drilling and prepared for use in homes and businesses through a simple filtration and separation process. Natural gas consists of a mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with Methane the primary component. The composition of natural gas can vary and can also include Ethane, Propane, Butane and Petane. The natural gas used within homes is typically almost entirely Methane. In its purest form, natural gas is colourless, shapeless and odourless. The distinctive smell associated with natural gas is caused by Mercapten, added by natural gas companies to assist with the detection of leaks.

What are the uses of natural gas?

Natural gas is widely used to perform a broad range of functions, such as generating electricity, fuelling automobiles and other vehicles, producing feedstock for fertilizers, producing hydrogen, and the manufacture of fabrics, glass, steels, plastics, paints and other products. One of the most common uses of natural gas is cooking and heating around the home, with natural gas considered a reliable, efficient and cost effective alternative to electricity. A number of different gas companies provide gas to homes around Australia for the purposes of domestic consumption.

How does natural gas affect the environment?

Natural gas is the cleanest of all fossil fuels. It has a high energy density, so it works more efficiently and produces less waste, with up to 75% less greenhouse gas emissions than electricity. The production and use of natural gas release greenhouses gases, with carbon dioxide and other small amounts of gas released during combustion and small amounts of methane, a very powerful greenhouse gas, sometimes unintentionally released during extraction, processing and transportation. Despite these releases of greenhouse gases, natural gas is still considered more environmentally friendly than oil and coal.
