Victorian Price Update

Last updated 4th June 2026

Your guide to the 2026 rates update, yearly estimates, and the new midday Smart Rate.

As more renewable power flows into the Victorian grid, the energy market is changing. While these updates are led by the state regulator and local networks, our priority is making sure you have everything you need to manage your energy costs with confidence.

The best way to stay in control is through the Lumo Energy App. You can track your daily usage, make a payment, and ensure you're making the most of your new rates without having to pick up the phone.

When do the new rates start?

The date your new rates begin depends on your contract:

  • Standard Plans: 1 July 2026
  • Market Plans: 1 August 2026
  • Fixed Rate Plans: Your rates are locked in until your current fixed-rate period ends. If your household is transitioning to the new network Smart Rate tariff structure during this time, your fixed rates will remain unchanged, plus you will receive an additional hour of lower off-peak pricing each day.

Need to check your plan? Look at the plan name on your latest bill, then search for your Fact Sheet on our website using your postcode. You'll find your offer type under 'Offer details'.

Locked-in discounts

Following a recent update by the Victorian energy regulator, the way your Early Bird™ Discount is applied is changing. If your plan includes this discount, it will now be applied automatically to every bill you receive.

What this means for you is less hassle and more certainty. This update ensures you always pocket the full benefit of your plan and stay on top of your energy costs.

The new midday Smart Rate

If you received a notice which mentions a move to the "Smart Rate", your plan structure is changing. This applies to eligible Victorian homes moving to a new three-part plan designed to reward you for using power when renewable energy is most abundant.

Understanding your new Smart Rate window

Smart Rate window: Off Peak 9pm-11am standard rate, Smart Rate 11am-4pm lowest rates, Evening Peak 4pm-9pm higher rates
  • Smart Rate (11am – 4pm) This is your daily window where rates are at their lowest. No solar panels? No problem! You don't need solar to access these rates. The Smart Rate lets eligible homes use power while renewable energy is abundant in the grid at a lower cost.
  • Evening Peak (4pm – 9pm) This is when the grid is under the most pressure. To give you more time to manage your usage, the peak period now starts at 4pm - an hour later than many older plans.
  • Off-Peak (All other times) A steady, standard rate for the rest of the day and night.

Pro Tip: Use our usage tracking tool in the Lumo Energy app to see exactly how much energy your appliances are using during these different windows.

Managing your estimate

Your notice includes a yearly cost estimate based on your past usage. Because this is just a guide, you can manage your actual costs by shifting when you use your heavy appliances.

  • Move your chores: Try setting timers for your dishwasher or washing machine to run during the midday window.
  • Charge & filter: If you have an electric vehicle, charging it midday is often the most cost-effective time. The same goes for pool pumps.
  • Monitor the peak: Shifting even one or two daily tasks away from the 4pm–9pm peak can help you manage your total bill.

Total choice and control

Changes like the new residential smart rate are designed to help you make the most of cheaper energy. However, if your assigned tariff structure doesn't suit your household routine or business operations, you have the flexibility to change it at any time by contacting us.

Residential time of use customers have the choice to switch to a Flat Rate tariff, while business customers can choose between a Flat Rate or Demand Tariff.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my rates different from my friend’s in another suburb?

Victoria has five different electricity networks. Each one sets its own prices for the poles and wires in their area, which is why rates vary by location.

Do I need a new meter for the Smart Rate?

No. If you’ve received a notice about these changes, it means you already have a smart meter. The update happens automatically; you don’t need to do a thing.

What if I already have solar panels?

The Smart Rate is the perfect partner for your solar system. By running heavy appliances midday, you use your own solar power first. On cloudy days, the Smart Rate acts as a low-cost backup, ensuring any extra power you need from the grid is at the day’s lowest rate. It’s a simple way to get more from your solar and avoid higher evening prices.

When does my new plan start?

Your specific start date is on the front of your notice - most customers will move on 1 July or 1 August 2026.

Why is my "Peak" period shorter now?

If you are moving to a Smart Rate, the peak period now starts at 4pm instead of 3pm. That’s one less hour of peak pricing every single day, giving you more breathing room in the afternoon.

Can I switch to a Flat Rate?

Absolutely. If your assigned tariff doesn't match your household routine or business operations, you can ask to change it at any time. Residential customers have the option to switch to a Flat Rate, while business customers can choose between a Flat Rate or a Demand tariff.
